Nebraska is home to a strong base of financial and insurance companies propelled by technological advances. As a matter of fact, Omaha is ranked among the top five most promising fin-tech hubs in the nation. That foundation, in addition to a No. 7-ranked higher education system delivering graduates into the sector, has ignited a new entrepreneurial and innovative energy, in urban and rural areas. Dubbed the “Silicon Prairie” by a number of tech and entrepreneurial trade publications, the Lincoln-to-Omaha corridor is becoming well known for its access to capital and economic support structure.

BUILDING FOR TOMORROW

The startup and accelerator framework can unlock enhanced innovation and productivity in several key sectors for Nebraska, including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and logistics and financial service. According to the Blueprint Nebraska strategic economic development plan,
innovative industries have experienced:
  • 2.7% growth in productivity since 1980 (vs. 1.4% for other sectors).
  • Nearly double the earnings growth of other sectors.
  • 60% more patents.
  • 20% more exports. 
  • And, every job in a growing innovation sector yields three to five related jobs, while other sectors only create one.

Nebraska is increasing its investment in technology. To accomplish this, Blueprint Nebraska calls for:

  • A fin- and insure-tech accelerator.
  • A capital fund to support development of next-generation technology.
  • Manufacturing centers of excellence on industry 4.0/automation.
  • Boosting public and private research and development an additional $200 million.​
